This has been a long week for our family. I think I blogged about getting sick with a cold last week. I started feeling better by the end of the week, but then the boys starting coming down with it. Josh got it, then got over it pretty quickly. Kyle got it, and didn't get over it quickly. By Tuesday he was complaining of a sore throat, which I chalked up to drainage, and by that night he was complaining of a an ear ache... which i chalked up to lots of sinus pressure. He thought he had strep and an ear infection - turned out he was right. I had to take him to the doctor on Wednesday morning when the white pockets showed up on the back of his throat. So, I got his meds, put him to bed, and headed back to work. (As a side note here... can I just say that work has been really stressful for the past few weeks. I don't want to complain about it too much, but sheese! Can we get a break yet, or what??) Anyway... Kyle was out of school until Friday, so off on our own Meg and I headed on Thursday. At the end of the day she came to the office looking awful! Not that she still wasn't cute, but she looked like she didn't feel well. She had a slightly elevated temp, her throat was killing her, she was flushed, and she had a massive headache. I checked her throat, called the doc, and thankfully they called us in some meds. She went to bed, and I had to wake her up to take her meds both that night and the next morning. She pretty much slept solid from 5:00 Thursday afternoon to 10:00 Friday morning. I woke up feeling great on Friday morning, but then had strep hit me like a ton of bricks by mid-morning. The headache and fatigue were something else. And once again, thankfully, the doctor called me something in. I came home, went to bed, and have pretty much stayed here since Friday. I'm feeling more like myself today, but still really tired.
And, if all of this weren't bad enough... Kyle woke up yesterday morning with pink-eye! Yep, you read that right. The poor kid hasn't been this sick with this many different things in a LONG time. He was always my sickest baby... ear infections, pink-eye, stomach viruses, fifth disease... you name it, there was one winter when he had it all. Thankfully we still have plenty of eye drops around from the last round of pink-eye in the house 2 weeks ago.
So, can you tell that I am MORE than ready for spring to hurry up and get here? I want to open up the house, get rid of all of the yuckies around here, and get life back to normal. Please? Can we do that?
Which brings me to another sore spot... what is up with the forecast for snow this week? I'm so over it already!!
While I have been in bed the past few days, I've been doing research on some different topics.
1. We need a new washer and dryer. We have had our current units for 13 years now... we bought them right before Megan was born. They have been good to us, but they are ready to retire. I've been reading up on the differences between front-loaders and top-loaders. What I really want are the way impressive Electorlux models that can wash and dry a load in 36 minutes! What?! That's just crazy! Sounds sweet, and would be loads of fun to have (no pun intended!), but have you seen the price on those things? CRAZY! So, needless to say, I will not be getting those. I do love the red models, though. They are so pretty! I think, though, that I will stick with a top-loading model. I've just really heard some negative things about front loaders, and I'm not up for the hassle. But, which one should I get? I guess when it boils right down to it, I don't need a super fancy model. Something that gets the job done with as little fuss as possible will be just fine. This is when it's really nice that I have a BIL in the appliance business. He sold us our last set, and we'll get our next ones from him.
I've also been drooling over furniture at http://knockoffwood.blogspot.com/. Have you checked her out? I want the farmhouse bed (or as DH calls it, the barnyard bed! He's so cute!), nightstands, and a super cute bench to put under my lr windows.
And, last but not least, I've been researching square foot gardening. I know what size I want my beds to be, and where I want to put them. I want to do 3 - veggies, flowers and herbs. Or maybe 2 veggie and one herb... then flowers around the house. Hmmm... maybe I still don't know exactly what I want. I dream of growing tomatoes, peppers - bell and jalapeno, carrots, spinach, green beans, peas, rosemary, basil, thyme, italian parsley, oregano. Can't you just smell it now? Yummy!
I am a great-aunt, again!! My nephew and his wife welcomed their beautiful baby boy into the world on Friday night. Tupou Steven Boyd made his appearance, weighing in at 8 lbs and he was 3 weeks early. Bet you are wondering about that name, huh? The beautiful mother is Samoan, and the name is a family name. Steven is my nephew's first name, which is also his father's name. I can't wait to see pictures of him... I'm sure he is quite handsome.
I'm a bit bummed that the weekend is pretty much over. I didn't get to do anything on my list due to being laid up in bed, but there is always next weekend, right? And, only 2 more weeks until Spring Break!! Woohoo!!

The best!
I have the best sisters-in-law and mother-in-law in the world! They came over on Saturday night and helped me decorate the house. It was fun to have them over, and even more fun to have their expertise!
To see the before pictures of the house, see this post; to see the after pictures, look below!
This is the entryway:

There are still some things to do. I still have some pictures and vinyl to put up, and my wish-list of things to get for the house is a mile long, but I'm so tickled pink at what has been done so far. I'm excited for warmer weather to get here so I can start doing some work on the outside. I plan on doing some raised bed gardens. I want to plant veggies, herbs and flowers. I also want to do some flowers around the front for some fun color.
Thanks, girls, for coming to my rescue this weekend! I loved having all of you here, and we have to get together to play again soon!

Birthday
My birthday was last week. I am not saying how old I am, but I celebrated the 11th anniversary of my 29th birthday. ;)
We celebrated simply - the kids kicked us out of the house on Monday night, so Barry and I went out to dinner. While we were gone, the kids put together a sweet movie filled with birthday wishes for me. Wednesday night the girls had New Beginnings at church, so that is how I spent my b-day night.
The best surprise of the day, though, came from my wonderful hubby - he sent me flowers at work! To understand what a HUGE deal that was to me, you have to understand that my hubby doesn't do flowers. He thinks they are a waste of money, and would rather spend his hard-earned dollar on something that is going to last longer than a day or two. He actually got me flowers a couple of times over the years, but never had any delivered to me. So, imagine my surprise when the delivery man actually said that the flowers in his hands were for me! The flowers are beautiful and smell heavenly! They have been on my desk all week, and looking at them has brought a smile to my face.
Ahhh... I love my hubby!

Budding Artists
As we were getting packed up and ready to move, we couldn't help but notice all of the artwork that our children have left on the walls over the years. We took pictures so we could remember all their great talent so we could keep it with us always. Here are a few of their "masterpieces":
This is one of the first times that Josh wrote his name... too bad it was on our bedroom wall!
Kyle was teeny tiny when he drew this on our wall as well. We couldn't figure it out at first, but then it dawned on us that it was a person.
The next few are from the boys' closet.

Not to be left out, Megan left her own mark on the world:
We also found a few other things that cracked us up, but we didn't get pictures of them. It seems that the boys got mad at one of us for something, and wrote the following, "You don't understand us! Josh & Kyle" And, the one that got Barry laughing the most was this one written on a slat on one of the girl's beds: "If you can read this, Kyle did it!"
We don't expect to find any of these treasures on the walls of our new home... at least we better not! The kids are a bit older now, and hopefully more responsible. But, I'm glad that we have these pictures to help remind us of a time when they were little.

Best Valetine's Day Ever?
Valentine's Day 2010 may go down as one of the best in the Mayfield family. I had a great plan for the day... which went way downhill as the day wore on. I woke up feeling great... slept well during the night, made yummy heart shaped buttermilk biscuits and chocolate gravy for breakfast. Everyone was so impressed (except Josh... but that is a whole 'nother story). I blogged yesterday about not being able to find much of anything that I needed to get ready for church, so I spent the majority of the day unpacking boxes and locating much needed hygiene items. As the day wore on, I started feeling really yucky. By late afternoon/early evening I had a full blown cold and felt pretty much like death warmed over. Barry sent me to bed, and my dreams of a perfect Valentine night went down the drain... or so I thought.
Josh has decided that he LOVES to make pizza, and since I had planned to make heart-shaped pizzas for dinner, he jumped on board with that. I gave him the recipe for the crust, told him to multiply it by 2 1/2 so we would have plenty of pizza for everyone, then I trotted off to bed. A while later my oldest comes and tells me that things are not going well in the kitchen. It seems that Josh did some figuring wrong and had about 4X as much water as was needed. Instead of throwing it out and starting all over again, he just kept adding more and more flour to the mix. I was reallly feeling to gross to really care too much, but then Barry comes to tell me that the ENTIRE kitchen is covered with flour. I really wish now that I had made myself get out of bed and go take pictures of this event, but at the time I didn't think of it. Well, Josh keeps on with making the pizza, Kayti has made the cupcakes (red velvet with homemade cream cheese icing), and someone has set the table. Part of our yearly Valentine dinner tradition is to eat dinner together by candle-light. Now, considering that I can't even find my deodorant yesterday morning, do you really think I can tell anyone where to find candles for last night? No. I have NO idea where they are, and I really feel too yucky to get up and try to find them. So, what does my sweet Megan do? She finds a flashlight, sets it up on the table, and announces that this will be our "candle" for the night.
Once dinner is done, I get out of bed to join my family at the table. The pizza actually looks great... the crust is about 2 inches tall, but it tastes good. We end up keeping the lights on since the flashlight was just not giving us enough light, and I promise a disappointed daughter that we will have a candle-light dinner together once we can find all the candles.
As we all sat there around the table, I couldn't help but think that this was the best V-Day dinner ever. What I wasn't able to do for my family, they pitched in together and did for me and each other. They gave of themselves, showing what real love is. I love them all tons, and I am so thankful to have them in my life. They make this journey not only worthwhile, but downright enjoyable.

Just a blurb...
We are in our new house!! I had planned to post tons of pictures of the moving day, and the fun of living out of boxes for a while, but I let Megan borrow my camera batteries and they died. I can't find my charger or any other batteries either, so I have NO pictures to share.
We love all of our space, however, I can't find anything this morning. I got out of the shower, and couldn't find deodorant, moisturizer, hair dryer... you get the idea. We didn't make it to church today because I can't find anything!!!
The kids asked me what we were going to do today, and I replied that we were going to try to get things a bit more organized. I had set up my kitchen a few days ago, so at least I can cook. I made heart shaped biscuits and chocolate gravy for breakfast. I have a treat planned for dinner, and I have to find all my batteries so I can share pictures with all of you. Guess that I had better get busy so I can get it all done!

Felt the need...
... to post something happy. But, not too much to report around here. Our life this week is one big mess of boxes, newspapers, tape... you get the idea.
Here is something, though, that makes me happy. My sweet hubby bought it for me, and I can't wait to put it to use:
Green is one of my favorite colors right now, and paired with the chocolate brown is just heavenly! I am searching now for chocolate brown sheets to match.
Can't wait to have the house all put together!

heavy heart
What an emotional roller coaster today has been. I started the day pretty self-absorbed in my anxiety over the upcoming move. Then by the afternoon I was facing a great fear, and tonight I am just sad.
For those who may not have heard, we had a terrible tragedy in our school system today. A 15 year old student was shot and killed by a fellow student while at school this afternoon. We got wind of this shortly after it happened when our SRO (School Resource Officer) was called to come to the other school to help out. As we started to get more news, we learned that the alleged shooter had been one of our students... he transfered over to the other middle school at the beginning of the school year. While he was at our school, I dealt with him on almost a daily basis. This child was on my son's fall soccer team. This child was just a child... 15 years old.
My heart aches tonight for not only the victim's family, but also the shooter's mother. I have had conversations with this woman... seen her struggle to do the right thing with/by her son. I can't even imagine the guilt, pain and sorrow that she is dealing with tonight.
I have also heard some uplifting stories coming from this tragedy - like a ninth grade class at our school who all got down on their knees and prayed after hearing about what was going on. It's stories like that that make you have a little more faith in this world.
I am thankful tonight that my own children are home, safe and sound, and I've given them extra hugs and made sure that they know I love them.

Oh come on... HURRY UP, already!
No, this time that is not me yelling at one of the kids. It's me yelling to the universe to speed up time! Just for a week, then it can go back to it's regularly scheduled programming. We start moving on Monday, and will be completely moved in by Saturday. I am so anxious to just get it done and over with. I want the "fun" part of moving to get here already... the unpacking, finding the "perfect" spot for things, and the decorating. I'm pretty tired of living in a box maze... of wanting to pack more but not really having the space for all the boxes. I have spent the past few weeks getting all the utilities/cable/internet/address changes taken care of. I've been stock-piling boxes, tape, newspaper. And I feel about as anxious as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs!
The past few weeks have not all been full of drudgery. I've been browsing lots of stores (Hobby Lobby, Target, Wal Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond) looking for fun and cute decorating ideas. I've probably decorated this house in my head a hundred different ways. I've bought a few items and drooled over many more! I've got a wish list a mile long, and the budget to take about two steps. But, I can't wait to do what I can with what I have. My super talented mother and sisters-in-law are going to be coming to play with me the weekend after we move in, and I can't wait for them to come over and share their ideas with me.
I guess that it is a good thing we have lots planned this weekend... fundraiser dinner tonight, a baptism tomorrow... that will keep us good and busy. And then before you know it, it will be time to load up the big truck and be on our way. Woohoo!!!
