Day 3... Salad Dressing Day

I think this is one of the most brilliant ideas for Spirit Week ever!! Today was "Salad Dressing Day"... Seniors were Caesar, Juniors were Ranch and Sophomores were Thousand Island. Kayti enjoyed coming up with her costume... she used the basic dress of another costume she used several years ago for a murder mystery dinner, and tweaked it some. I found a tropical shirt on clearance for Josh, and he paired it with jeans today since he thought it was too cold for shorts this morning. (Plus his brother wore the shorts he wanted to wear the other day, and they were dirty this morning!) Josh liked the 'fro so much he decided to add it to today's outfit as well!

Tomorrow is super hero/villian day... not sure what the kids have up their sleeves for that. Should be interesting!

Spirit Week... Decades Day

It's Homecoming week at Bob Jones this week, and each day the kids get to dress up as something different. Yesterday (Monday) was nerd day. I didn't get any pictures of Kayti... Josh refused to dress up... but she she looked really great.

Today (Tuesday) is Decades Day. This has been the day that Kayti has looked forward to since she was a Sophomore... Seniors get to dress up in 80's fashion! She and I had a lot of fun shopping yesterday for lace gloves and leg warmers. Where did we find such things in the year 2009? The Halloween Shop! She got up super early this morning so we could fix her hair and make up. I think she turned out just adorable. She is actually wearing my senior year school sweatshirt... something actually from the 80's!

I will admit to actually owning black lace gloves just like that, but I never wore my eye shadow like that! I would never wear green or blue eye shadow. I was all about the pinks and purples!

Josh didn't want to dress up yesterday. He said that he was going as himself since he was already a nerd. LAME! I asked him if he would wear an afro wig if I bought it for him, and he agreed, so I got him one. That was about as 70's as he got today!

They looked like a time-warp heading out the door this morning! So fun!!

Reading the fine print...

I think I must be the world's worst consumer. I hate reading the "fine print", especially when buying something online. You know those "user agreements" that pop up before you buy something? Who wants to waste their time reading those... it's just easier to click the "accept" button and move on to the adrenaline rush of actually purchasing something! And truthfully, they are usually so hard to understand with all the legal jargon that even if I did read it, I will admit to not really understanding it.

Well, this practice came back to bite me a few weeks ago. I had been hearing all about a great new weight loss product on one of the local radio stations. I'm sure that most of you have heard about it. Everyone who has ever taken it has lost tons of weight without even doing anything... the fat just "melts" off. I admit I was taken in by it. The rational side of me said that I should be careful... afterall these are really paid spokesmen that are trying to sell this product. But I argued with myself that there were other "listeners" who were calling in, singing the praises of the product, so it couldn't be all bad. I finally broke down and bought the stupid stuff one day, excited by all the thought of all these unwanted pounds I would soon be losing.

The product arrived, and I started taking it the next morning. The directions are pretty simple... take 2 in the morning; drink nothing but water (1-2 glasses) for 2-3 hours, then eat breakfast as you normally would. For best results, drink 8-10 more glasses of water throughout the day, and eat lunch and dinner as normal as well. I resolved to get up around 4:30 to take it, exercise for about an hour, then get on with getting ready for the day. I admit to being a bit nervous about taking the stuff  - my doctor had given me a prescription appetite suppressant several months ago, and that stuff made me so jumpy that I couldn't take it after the second day, and I didn't want to go through that again. Thankfully, I felt really good the first day I took it. I was also pretty proud of myself for sticking to my plan, and getting up and actually exercising that day, too.  I followed my routine for the whole week, then weighed again to check my results - 2 pounds lost in the first week. Not too bad, so onto the second week. I weighed in again after the second week... this time I had only lost one more pound. Hmmm... this wasn't the 10 pounds in 2 weeks that everyone had joyfully gushed about on the radio, but oh well, at least I had lost some, so I decided to keep it up. For the next 2 weeks, I yo-yo'ed around 4-4 1/2 pounds lost. I would weigh in almost daily, and obsess over every tenth of a pound gained or lost. I was really getting discouraged, and almost called the radio station to ask them why it wasn't working!

Well, during this same time frame I started to notice some things with my body that just weren't quite right. Some of these same things manifested themselves about 5 years ago when I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, so I decided to make an appointment to go see the doctor. I had the lab work done on the Thursday before Labor Day, and they rushed the results for me so that we could get them back before the holiday. They called on Friday to tell me that my thyroid levels were really messed up, and they were increasing my prescription by 50mcg's. That's a lot! I was really stunned. So, I grabbed my meds at the pharmacy that afternoon, and started taking them the next morning. I wondered about continuing to take the "miracle weight loss pills", but just really didn't feel that good about it, so I stopped taking them. It has taken me a couple of weeks, but I am finally starting to feel like my thyroid levels are getting back to normal... YAY!

I started doing some research, and guess what I found on the product website? There in the fine print was the following, "Not intended for use by persons under 18 years of age. Consult a physician before using this product if you have any medical condition including, but not limited to, strokes, high blood pressure, heart, liver, kidney or thyroid disease, diabetes, anemia, depression, anxiety, other psychiatric conditions, a family history of these or other medical conditions, or if taking any prescription, OTC and/or other herbal medications."

I'm not sure if these pills just aggravated a problem that was about to rear it's head, or if they are the cause of the problem. I do know that I feel pretty dumb for falling for the gimmick, and the old saying is true... "if it seems too good to be true, it probably is".  I am happy to report, though, that even though I stopped taking the pills,  I still continue to get up early and work out (almost every morning!). I have lost more weight in the past 2 weeks than I did the 3 1/2 - 4 weeks that I took the stuff. So, I guess I have learned a lesson the hard way... if I want to be healthy and trim, I am going to have to do it the old fashion way... eat less and exercise more.

And, I guess that I had better start reading the fine print a little more closely, too!

Miss Megan

I was finally able to get pictures of Megan's game today. We weren't sure if we were going to get to play or not, since the fields have been closed several times this week due to the rain. Madison decided to open the fields today, so despite the wet and muddy conditions, we played... and won! Woohoo!

Here are a couple of Megan in action...

She played in the goal the first two quarters, but didn't see any action at all. Her dad made her jump around every once in a while to keep alert!

She sat out the 3rd quarter, then went in as defender the 4th. She finally saw some action, and I was able to get a decent shot of her.

And... just because the mud showed up better on the other team than ours, I had to include these pictures of the muddiness!

Life...

Life is just moving right along lately. We are busy, busy, busy with work, school and soccer.

Kayti
Is off taking her ACT for the second time this morning. She made a great score the first time around, but she wanted to take it again to see if she could improve it any. Her math score wasn't very good last time, so she has been studying up on that.
She is loving being a senior, and she is really enjoying all her classes. She is really looking forward to her Creative Writing 2 class next semester. She was a bit apprehensive about her Seminary teacher this year, because several of the kids who had her last year had a few harsh things to say, but she is really enjoying her class.

Josh
Is getting the hang of being at "The Bob" and enjoying it for the most part. He is making new friends, and is loving his Drama class.
His soccer team is undefeated right now, and he is enjoying his coach.
He was recently called to be the Teachers Quorum President. He has served in a presidency before, but this has been a new experience for him. I'm proud of the way he has served so far. It's been great to see him taking on new responsibilities, and handling himself so well.

Kyle
Is growing like a weed! He is now officially taller than me (he really has been taller for a while, but I haven't wanted to acknowledge it... there is NO denying it now!), a fact that he really likes to throw in my face as much as he can.
He is enjoying being an 8th grader, and loves his science teacher. His grades have been pretty good so far. His SAT scores qualified him to take Algebra 1 this year instead of Pre-Algebra, and I decided to go ahead and move him up to the class. I've worried that he might struggle some since he skipped Pre-Algebra, but so far he is holding his own.

Megan
Has finally gotten the routine of middle school down, and loves being there. She loves all of her teachers, and is doing very well in class. We found out yesterday that her Language Arts teacher has requested that she be moved into an advanced class, which she will start on Monday. She is really excited by that.
She is really turning into a social butterfly as well, and has enjoyed going to all the football games so far this season. This past week has been spirit week at school, and she had a ball dressing up every day for that.

Barry and I are both busy with work, and then running kids around after that. We have soccer practices every night of the week, except Wednesday, which is filled with youth activities at church. Saturdays are busy with games and trying to catch up on housework.
We have both been trying to be healthier, as well. Barry and the boys have been doing P90X in the afternoons. I'm proud of them and the way they are sticking to it. I have been getting up pretty early and working out before getting kids and myself ready for school. I found out last week that my thyroid is acting up again, and getting the meds adjusted for it have really wiped me out this week. I'm really tired of being tired! I had to bring Kyle home from school early one day this week because he wasn't feeling well, and when we got home, I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up about 2 hours later, ran a couple of errands, then came home and crashed again. Thankfully, Barry was home that night in time to run kids around, and I crawled in bed. I couldn't believe that I could sleep that much and still feel so exhausted the next day. I'm hopeful that soon it will be all straightened out, and I will feel like myself again.

Well... laundry is calling me, so I guess that I had better get off of here!

Cameras

Don't laugh, but... Does anyone remember these cameras?

I got one of these when I was in high school... my very first camera. I LOVED the thing, and had tons of fun taking lots of pictures with it. The pictures were not the best quality, but I still loved the fact that I had my own camera. You might be wondering what has prompted this trip down memory lane... Megan has been asking for her own camera, and I couldn't help but think of my very first one.

Megan loves to take pictures, and sometimes I find the most interesting shots when I download pictures off my camera. Here are a few that she has taken:

I guess that Santa had better start shopping... :)
