New 'Do's

I had a hair appointment the other night, and I took the girls with me. Megan wanted to get hers trimmed up, and Kayti didn't really want anything done to hers. I have been wanting her to get a short, sassy cut for a while, but she has been resisting. She finally caved! Now if I could just get her to get up and fix it every morning we would be getting somewhere!

Megan surprised me and asked for bangs. I reminded her how long it took them to grow out the last time she didn't want them, but she didn't care. With her new cut she looks so much more like my sister, Kristi, that it is scary. My mom has a picture of Kris when she was in grade school with a very similar cut. I would love to find it and do a side-by-side of the two of them. Barry and I have laughed at Megan... since she got it cut all she does is walk around with a comb in her hand. Our little tom-boy has turned into a prissy girl!

Gone to the birds

We sat down the other morning for scripture study, and heard this weird sound. It reminded us of bats. We rushed outside, and saw the sky filled with birds. It has happened just about every morning this week, and I thought that I would snap a quick picture of them. I don't know that I have every seem so many birds at once before. The funny thing is, though, is that at dusk every day this week as well, we have seen the birds flying back the other way.

Happy Birthday to me!

Today is my 38th birthday. I've had a great time milking my birthday this weekend! Barry was supposed to take me out on Friday night, but he had more problems at work, and didn't get home until after 11:00. I had Stake Leadership on Saturday morning. I left a guilt-filled letter for the kids, basically telling them that if they didn't have the house clean the way that I like it, they would ruin my whole birthday! Thankfully the house looked great when I got home. Barry and I went out for a movie (Fools Gold), and then we went to Oh! Bryan's for dinner. I got a yummy steak, and enjoyed every bite of it! Barry had warned the kids to be on their best behavior, and told them that if there were any problems to call his cell, not mine. He talked to them several times throughout the day for various reasons, and I have to say that it was nice not to have to worry about anything. While we were gone, Kayti made me a cake. One of the phone calls to dad was for help with the cake. She was having problems removing it from the pan, and he was trying to help her with that. She was able to "fix" it, and it tasted yummy.

Barry had to go back in to work this morning to try to resolve some more problems. We were hoping that he would be done in time for church, but that didn't happen. He did make it home for a little while, and fixed dinner for us - pork chops and rice, which were so good! It was great to come home to a hot cooked meal! As soon as we finished eating, I got my present, which Josh wrapped himself! Barry got me the 7th book in the "Women's Murder Club" series. These are the books that the tv show are based on.

Barry had to head back to work after that, so I gave Kyle a hair cut. Josh usually won't let me touch his head, which is fine, because he is very ticklish, and squirms way too much. Well, tonight he wanted me to do it, so I decided to go ahead while he was in a cooperative mood. We decided to make the first pass right down the middle of his head, and once we did I realized that I had forgot to put the guide on!! I started crying, Josh started laughing, and ran to the mirror to look at himself. He loved it, so we finished up. Thankfully he has a pretty nice-looking noggin, and it actually looks nice on him.

Well, I guess that I am going to treat myself to my pj's and a cozy bed!

Happy Valentine's Day!

I have always considered myself a hopeless romantic. I would rather read a clean romance novel, or watch a romantic movie than anything else. Barry always hates it when I read a Nicholas Sparks novel... I stay "gooshy" for days! I sometimes think that I did myself a disservice by reading so many; I came to have a slightly skewed idea of real romance. Barry is anything but a romantic, and I used to get really upset by this fact. I always wanted some big, grand jesture like in the movies, but I have come to appreciate that it is really the small, everyday simple things that count. I appreciate the he will jump in and help out with the housework, like the laundry, dusting and vacuuming. I love it when he cooks dinner... chili dogs, or take-out! I love it when he brings me a Sprite, just because he thinks I will want one. I appreciate it when he lets me warm up my cold toes on his warm legs! I am thankful that he takes the kids to their activities, and brings them home again, even when it's early in the morning or late at night. I love how protective he is of me, and how he works hard to make sure the kids show respect to me. Barry is a big home-body, so I really am thankful for those times when he gets out of the house with us.  And even in the heat of the moment of an arguement, I appreciate how logical he can be (even if it ticks me off at first that he is not as emotional about the issue as I am). I love how he makes me laugh to get me over being mad at him. I love it when he will go grocery shopping with me and push the buggy. I appreciate how forgiving he is of me, especially when I have messed up... again! I appreciate the fact that he goes to a stressful job everyday to provide for us. I really love that he is the one teaching Kayti how to drive, and relieving me of that stress. I am thankful that he never gives up, even when there are times that he would like to throw in the towel.

Barry and I have been celebrating Valentine's Day together for 17 years now. During the first few years of our married life, he was the manager of The Great American Cookie Company in the mall. He would work crazy hours during Valentine's Day, and usually come home dead tired, and only want to go straight to bed. He would always bring home some small token of his love, though, for which I was always grateful. He doesn't like to buy flowers... he hates wasting the money on something that will die, but he has surprised me with them on several occasions. One year he bought me gold hoop earrings... still my favorite pair. I started a tradition with the family years ago; we have a special Valentine's Day candle-light dinner together as a family. We get out the "good plates and goblets" and have red food. Barry's favorite meal is chili dogs and tater-tots, so we have had that on more than one occasion. We have also had lazagna, red beans and rice, spaghetti, and this year we did meatball subs. The kids have really come to look forward to this dinner, but this year we had to do something a little different. Barry got stuck at work tonight, not knowing when he was going to make it home. This really bummed us all out, thinking of having dinner without him, so we decided to take dinner to him. He was only able to just run out to the car and grab it, but at least we got to see him, and the kids got their daddy hugs in. He promised to take me out to dinner and a movie tomorrow night, in celebration of V-day and my birthday. I'm thinking that he has something else up his sleeve as well, because he pulled Kayti out of the car to talk to her about something. All Kayti is saying is that he asked her to baby-sit tomorrow night. Well, just add that to the list of things that I love about him... he loves to be sneaky and surprise me with stuff. After the kids and I got home we spread out a picnic blanket in the living room and watched a movie while we ate our dinner.

We hope all of you had a great Valentine's Day, and enjoyed being with the ones you love!

I'm starting to feel OLD!

I don't feel like I should be much older than 18, but life is sure telling me these past couple of weeks that I am much older than that!

To start with, Kayti got her first college brochure in the mail the other day! What?!! NO!!! She is not old enough to be getting those yet!

We had a Madison Tri-Ward activity last week, and our ward was in charge. We did a Black & White Ball for all of the kids 12 and up. Seeing my 12 year old son dance with a girl was just a bit too much for me!!! Thank goodness I had my camera with me to capture the moment, though! ;)

Josh has become somewhat of a chick magnet lately. He's had girls spraying perfume on him, and drawing hearts on his arms. He got invited to his first boy-girl combined birthday and valentine party this week, too. The other day the kids were downstairs watching cartoons. Barry had just left for work, and Kayti and I were upstairs. Suddenly we heard this deep voice, and Kayti and I just stared at each other. It took us a minute to register the fact that the voice we heard was actually Josh. Dang, he sounds like his dad sometimes!

Add to all of this the fact that I turn 38 soon, and I'm getting depressed!

New Beginnings

We had New Beginnings this week, and I wanted to share what we did. Our theme was the 7 Wonders of the World, and each wonder represented a value. On July 7 of last year, 7 new wonders were chosen (voted on by lots of people around the world) and we based our program on those. Each of the 7 YW Leaders chose or was assigned a wonder and a value. We then had to decorate a room to represent that wonder, and come up with an activity to do with the girls and parents based on the value. We divided the girls and parents up into groups, then had them rotate through the rooms. I got pictures of all of the rooms except for two, because they were still being decorating when I had time to take pictures! Hopefully she got some pics and can share them.

After we did all of the activities, we met back in the gym for dessert (fruit pizzas with toppings in value colors) and a slide show. We have been taking pictures of the girls at different activities since we became a ward, and one of the talented leaders put them together and made a DVD out of them. She chose 3 songs from the "Steadfast and Immovable" CD as background music. It was so much fun! We also had 2 of the graduating girls bear their testimonies about the value of Personal Progress. We gave each girl a copy of the DVD to take home. It was a really fun night; a little laid back than usual. We have decided that we like making New Beginnings more of a fun night, and YW in Excellence a more spiritual night.

In each room we talked a little bit about the wonder, then did our activity. The Christ Redeemer Statue in Brazil represented Faith. The girls decorated these cute plaques:

The Taj Mahal represented Divine Nature. In this room they talked about how the Taj Mahal was actually a mausoleum built by an Indian King for his wife. Then they talked about temple marriage, and they were each given a small mirror. They were told to look in the mirror and see their own divine natures.

Machu Picchu, Peru represented Individual Worth. The leader who did this room had a mom and brother visit Machu Picchu, and she put their photos together and showed the girls a slide show. Then the girls wrote nice things about each other.

I did Chichen Itza, Mexico, and it represented knowledge. I built a pyramid out of construction paper, and decorated with greenery. We played Book of Mormon trivia. Winners were given "gold bars" of chocolate!

Choice and Accountability was the Colosseum in Italy. She had fresh bread for them to eat, and told them a story of a girl who lived in Rome and who came to hear about Christ. She was engaged at the time, and had to make a choice between her testimony of Christ and her finace. They used their scriptures to look for answers to help her. In the end, she was true to her testimony, and was sent to the Colosseum to face her death.

Petra, Jordan represented Good Works. In this room they were given a poem and a pen. They talked about service, and what things they could do to be of service to others.

Integrity was the Great Wall of China. Here the leader talked about some of the things that we are doing in YW to try and promote more reverance, and asked for the parents help in doing this.

Here are some pics of the decorations we used in the gym, and the DVD we gave them:
